Description
Deganawida was an indigenous peacemaker born in what is now the northeastern
US/southeastern Canada sometime between the 12th and 15th centuries. His “The White Roots
of Peace” is a concept in which we make peace within ourselves first, then in our families and
communities, and finally between communities. In this Ecological & Social Justice workshop,
we will study how we can begin to forge the “White Roots of Peace” anew. We will do this by
finding how we can live sustainably in our local ecology by purchasing or producing our basic
needs for food, shelter, clothing, and energy within our bio-geographical region and without
destroying our ecology or the ecologies of other regions far away from us. In our first three
sessions on July 6, we will discuss the origin and parse out the details of our current state of
affairs. In our second three sessions on July 20th, we will tease out how we can make changes in
our individual and communal lifestyles to reverse the damage we are currently causing. We will
come up with a commonsense blueprint to engage in a sustainable peaceful lifestyle that does not
oppress those around us or destroy our ecologies on a planetary scale. Between July 6 and 20 we
will research who we can work with on a local basis to sustainably produce and obtain what we
actually need to thrive. In monthly follow-up sessions we will fine-tune our working family and
community blueprints so they may be successful over the long term and down through the
generations.
