The Indigenous Diné (Navajo) People have a concept that is the core of their spiritual teaching. That concept is called hözhö. It is translated to English as Walking in Beauty. The concept of Walking in Beauty is that of being in harmony, wholeness, and balance with our earth and all who reside within her precinct. The concept of hözhö is in complete alignment with the central teaching of Christianity, which is based on Jewish law, and as spoken through the words of Jesus: ”And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Upon these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets. ”Matthew 22:37-40 NASB2020. For this retreat we will contemplate the concept of hözhö and how that rests within the Great Commandment to love God and love your neighbor. We will take away from the retreat a call to action to walk in love and beauty throughout our lives, and with all who live on our beautiful earth whether they be two-legged, four legged, winged, clothed in brown & green, or are difficult to see through our human eyes.
